Petit Connoisseur – Art: A book report

I'm not sure why, but early on we decided that we wanted Miloh to know how to speak and read. Therefore decided to read to him. I know it's weird but we're just like that.

As I started reading his books I noticed a lot of ridiculous things. Some things in simple word books were wrong, some story-lines fell totally flat (I'm not expecting great literature but a little effort is nice), and some things just didn't make sense (and not in a good Dr. Seuss way).

So I've decided to do some book reviews, in my own way...but before I start ripping books to shreds I thought I'd start with one I like, although I didn't like it at first.

Petit Connoisseur: Art.

It's a simple 7 spread book with art words like Moma, Dada, Van Gogh and such.

I was an art major so I got stuck on a few of the spreads. Sure Van Gogh is in his style as Dali is in his and such.

But cubism is just blocks stacked up, in more of a pop style if anything. Plus why is MoMA in there? It's not a style.

That's when I hated the book.

But after reading it a few times I got it.

MoMA is a pic of a kid with his mom. Dada is a dad. Dali a doll and Cubism was blocks. I'm sure Miloh got it at his young age and I was a bit of a fool.

The art major in me then loved the irreverence of it...because art should be fun and not untouchable. Now it's one of my favorite books to read to Miloh...although it's a bit short.

So check it out...and wait for some upcoming book reports where I rip the books to shreds.

  2. Looking forward to more book reports! It's always a struggle to find nice books, but after all it's the way we tell it that makes it a good book :)

Dear Scott the Paleontologist – the response... Wait sorry... the awesome response

In my last post I asked some incredibly pressing questions to Dr. Scott Sampson aka Scott the Paleontologist. Questions that any parent of a Dinosaur Train fan wants to know... I got a reply and I have to say Dr. Scott is hilarious and pretty awesome... But I'm a fan of science humor... So here are his responses in line with mine. They're in blue because that's the color of most of  Shiny Pteranodon. Dear Scott the Paleontologist, My son Miloh and I are fans of Dinosaur Train and as an avid fan I have some questions regarding it that I hope you can answer: The train is a steam engine. Does it run off coal? If it does use coal is there a possibility that greenhouse gases from that could have lead to the extinction of dinosaurs? How come this isn't a theory? Very interesting question. Yes, to the best of my knowledge, the Dinosaur Train runs on fossil fuels, but we actually do have an episode upcoming where we investigate alternative fuel trains. Given that ...

New Giveaway: ABC's for Expectant Dads - 10 awesome copies

Winners have been picked for the giveaway. Todd was so nice as to give all who entered by the deadline a copy of his book. Thanks all who entered...I sent an email to you for your info. Please email me (info on the header) if you don't get that email. Rommel I could not find your email...please let me know your contact info. A bit ago I found Todd Lieman in Twitterland and he sent me a copy of his book ABC's for Expectant Dads: The Ultimate A- for Dads-in-Training. I'd looked at a bunch of expectant dad books and I thought most were terrible. I did pick up The Expectant Father and I liked it but I haven't looked at it in months. I think it's tough for dad's because we're just reading about what's going on with the mothers and it's easier to hear it from them. Staci is reading so much that she keeps me up to date on things I should know and I'm sure most expectant moms are the same. I'm also luckily in that doing this blog has connected...

Took awhile... Here's an infographic of MF's first year

I finished this about a year ago just for my personal use but thought I'd share it. It's a visualization of MF's first year in numbers. Diapers (with and without poo), bottles and photos taken are the lines in the background. The markers are milestones. The ones on the top are regular milestones you'd see on a chart and the ones on the bottom are things he did that were firsts. Hint... Use the toggle full page at the lower right of the image... I'm not sure why zoom.it is making it all bitmappy but it's pretty readable. Once I find something better to show this I'll update the image. I'll also be adding to this. I have a lot more I can put on it but I'm not sure when I'll get to it... Check back in 15 years.
